About Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a natural, fat-soluble, and powerful antioxidant that is often considered synonymous with the best known member of the Vitamin E family - alpha-tocopherol. Contrary to popular belief, Vitamin E is not a single compound; it is a collection of 8 isomers (4 Tocopherols and 4 Tocotrienols), each of which has a slightly different pharmacological activity in the body. Historically, only one of those eight isomers, d-alpha tocopherol, has been considered nutritionally significant and happens to be the only form of Vitamin E that currently has an established RDA to maintain optimal health.

However, more recent studies are highlighting the benefits of consuming the full-spectrum of Vitamin E isomers, particularly the Tocotrienols, which appear to possess greater and more powerful antioxidant potential than Tocopherols and, are therefore, therapeutically more beneficial in terms of supporting healthy cognitive and heart functions.

Forms of Vitamin E - Natural vs. Synthetic

Most commercially available Vitamin E products feature Vitamin E in one or more of the forms listed below:

  • Natural Vitamin E - This is often considered synonymous with Vitamin E and is present in the non-esterified form as d-alpha tocopherol. Natural sources of Vitamin E in the d-alpha tocopherol form include soy (most common) and sunflower oils
  • Semi-Synthetic or Esterified Vitamin E - This form of Vitamin E results from the conversion of natural Vitamin E into the esterified form using acetic acid or succinic acid for stability. Commercially, these Vitamin E products are available as Vitamin E Acetate, Vitamin E Succinate, and Vitamin E Nicotinate, among others. These forms of Vitamin E must be de-esterified in the gut by the enzyme, esterase, into the free tocopherol form before they can be utilized by the body. As such, they are less desirable than the natural form of Vitamin E
  • Synthetic Vitamin E - The synthetic form of Vitamin E, as dl-alpha-tocopherol, is a mixture containing eight different isomers, of which only one (about 12 percent of the synthetic molecule) is identical to natural vitamin E. Synthetic Vitamin E has approximately half of the biological activity of natural vitamin E and synthetic forms of vitamin E are labeled with a dl- prefix on a supplement label.
  • Fractionated Forms - These are forms of Vitamin E that contain fractions of natural mixed tocopherols and high d-gamma-tocopherol

Full-spectrum Vitamin E GOLD™ provides a natural source of all 8 isomers of Vitamin E (4 Tocopherols + 4 Tocotrienols) for complete, balanced protection.
