About Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids, also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids, are essential to many of the body's functions, but cannot be synthesized by the body. Instead, to get the required amounts, they must be taken in from food or supplementation. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish, such as salmon, cod, tuna, and halibut; other seafood including algae and krill; and some plant and nut oils.

Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in supporting cardiovascular and joint health, are important for brain function, and are crucial for normal growth and development.

Ethyl Ester (EE) versus Triglyceride (TG) forms of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Most fish oil supplements are either available in Ethyl Ester form or the Triglyceride form. Structurally, the major difference between the two forms is that in Ethyl Ester, the fatty acids (EPA & DHA) are esterified to an ethanol backbone, while in TG, the fatty acids are esterified to a glycerol alcohol backbone. Pure Fish Oil Omega-3 Gold is in triglyceride form

Balancing the Omega-3 to Omega-6 Ratio

It is important to note that the typical American diet tends to contain 14 - 25 times more Omega-6 fatty acids than Omega-3 fatty acids, which many nutritionally oriented physicians consider to be way too high on the Omega-6 side. The high consumption of Omega-6 either from diet and/or supplementation is problematic because Omega-6 fatty acids are pro-inflammatory and excess consumption of these fatty acids can lead to health conditions for which inflammation is a risk factor. Consuming enough Omega-3 fatty acids, on the other hand, is necessary to balance the pro-inflammatory action of the Omega-6 Fatty Acids and is crucial to achieving and maintaining optimal health.

Frequently Asked Questions about Pure Fish Oil Omega-3

What are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids because they perform a number of essential functions in the body. Also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in supporting heart, joint, and cognitive health.

What is the recommended dosage of Omega-3 fatty acids?
The typical American diet is rich in Omega-6 fatty acids and low in Omega-3 fatty acids, making supplementation necessary. Depending on the reason for taking a Fish Oil supplement, recommended dosages can range from 500 mg to 3000 mg (3g). Doses exceeding 3000 mg a day, either from diet or supplementation, can actually increase risk of internal bleeding and should only be taken in consultation with and under the guidance of a healthcare professional. If you have or suspect a medical condition, please talk to your doctor before starting any kind of supplementation.

Does the fish source matter when deciding which fish oil supplement to take?
The American Heart Association recommends dietary intake of oily fish because they are naturally rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and individuals have to consume smaller amounts to meet the recommended intake of EPA+DHA fatty acids. This should not, however, be interpreted to mean that Omega-3 fatty acids from other sources of fish cannot be just as effective in helping to maintain healthy cardiovascular function. All things considered, there are virtually no differences in the structure or function of EPA/DHA Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil supplements, regardless of whether the Omega-3 fatty acids come from oily fish like sardines or cold water fish like Alaska Pollock that are used in our Omega-3 Gold product. Because Pollock may not naturally be high in Omega-3 fatty acids like sardines and mackerel, it is possible that, ounce for ounce, individuals may have to eat more pollock/cod than sardines or mackerels to get the recommended amount of EPA/DHA, which is not always feasible.

In other words, when it comes to fish oil supplements, most of which are standardized to a certain amount of the same EPA/DHA fatty acids, the species of fish used to source the Omega-3 fatty acids is not nearly as significant as the purity and sustainability of the fish species. To put it in perspective, vegans/vegetarians or individuals who experience side effects from fish oil supplements take plant sources of Omega-3 (Flax, Chia) to meet the recommended daily intake, something the AHA strongly recommends to minimize the risk of nutritional deficiencies. So, in considering which fish oil supplement to buy, purity, potency, and sustainability are far more important and relevant concerns than the species of fish that the oil is sourced from.

Why is Pure Fish Oil Omega-3 Gold™ made with fish oil concentrate extracted from Alaska Pollock as opposed to the oily fish (sardines, mackerel) used in other fish oil products?

Our decision to go with the Alaska Pollock is based on several considerations:

  • The Alaska Pollock is native to the cold, ocean waters of the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska and naturally low in toxins and heavy metals, including Mercury. In fact, the AHA considers the Pollock species of fish to be safe enough even for pregnant women and children to consume to meet required amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids
  • The Alaska Pollock is processed within minutes after being caught on fishing vessels that are FDA inspected
  • There are no differences in the safety, structure, or effectiveness of Omega-3 fish oil supplements standardized to EPA+DHA, regardless of the source of fish the oil comes from
  • The fish/fishery from which our oil is sourced is certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council
  • Over 95% of fish oil products currently being sold are extracted from oily fish (anchovy, sardines) from warm Atlantic waters off the coast of South America, one of the more heavily polluted waters. These fish are then transported thousands of miles to manufacturing facilities near Norway for extraction and the oil is then transported thousands of miles back to the US, where they are encapsulated and marketed under different brands. In contrast, our oil is from fish caught off the coast of Alaska, processed within hours of being caught on FDA inspected vessels, and extracted right here in the US in a cGMP certified manufacturing facility. So, not only is our Omega-3 Gold proudly 100% a product of USA, but it is also fresh tasting, has very little fishy smell, and produces little or no fishy burps/reflux.
  • Pure Fish Oil Omega-3 Gold™ exceeds Global Organization for EPA/DHA standards for purity and potency and conforms to the voluntary monograph set forth by the Council for Responsible Nutrition for meeting required amount of EPA/DHA in each softgel.
  • Best of all, our Pure Fish Oil Omega-3 Gold™ product is IFOS® 5-Star Certified , which confirms that it meets stringent international standards for purity, potency, freshness, and stability.

Is Omega-3 safe for long-term use?
When taken as directed and in conjunction with a sensible diet and exercise program, Omega-3 is generally recognized as safe (GRAS). However, caution is always advised in individuals who have or suspect a medical condition.

What are the contraindications for Omega-3?
Please consult a healthcare provider before taking Omega-3 supplements if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, and/or taking any OTC or prescription medications for a health condition.

Does Omega-3 interact with any prescription medications?
Because fish oil may increase fasting blood glucose levels, diabetic individuals currently taking or planning to take diabetic medications should take fish oil only under the supervision of their healthcare provider. Fish oil may also interact with supplements and medications that lower blood pressure, block the absorption of fats to effect weight loss, and birth control pills. As a general rule, please do not self-diagnose, self-treat, or self-medicate, if you know or suspect a medical condition.
