Andrographis - Immune Support Information

Andrographis (Andrographis paniculatta) has been traditionally used as a bitter tonic. Some cultures call it the Mahatita, which literally translates to "King of Bitters." Andrographis has long been used in traditional Indian and Chinese herbal medicine. The most common reported use is for protecting against liver damage because of its hepatoprotective effects. Interestingly, some of these uses have been validated by modern scientific research. Although the roots were sometimes used in traditional medicine, the leaves and flowers are now more commonly used.

Scientific Research on Andrographis

Researchers from the Biotechnology Department of the Indian Institute of Technology, West Bengal, India, say Andrographis supports normal immune function through the work of its active components called andrographolides and arabinogalactan proteins. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, scientists at Erebuni Medical Centre, Yerevan, Armenia found Andrographis to be highly supportive of normal respiratory function. Phytomedicine. 2002 Oct;9(7):589-97.
